Trichiasis

Trichiasis is a common condition that can be very irritating. Eyelashes grow towards the eye instead of outwards. A permanent removal of the affected lashes can be done with a special radiofrequency device.

What you should know about Trichiasis

Trichiasis is the abnormally growing or misdirected eyelashes. It causes discomfort and irritation to the eye, and can lead to permanent damage to the cornea and vision loss. The cornea (eye surface) is the most sensitive part of the body, so one single rubbing eyelash can cause significant discomfort.

Symptoms of trichiasis include constant eye irritation, eye redness, excessive tearing and sensitivity to light. The treatment for trichiasis depends on the number of eyelashes turned in. For temporary relief, the eyelashes can be plucked out (called epilation), but they usually grow back. For more severe cases and recurrence, the affected eyelash follicles can be permanently removed using a special radiofrequency device.
